Parents, just follow the instructions and have a great time with your kids worshipping God and learning from His Word together!
Lesson: Kindness
First watch this lesson video:
(Special thanks to the kids who submitted creative videos for this lesson… without being asked!)
After the video…
Explore together
Here are some activities to help you talk about the lesson with your family.
If your child likes to color, print out these coloring pages about kindness to color while you talk. Then discuss the questions below…
- In the story of David and Mephibosheth, why did David want to show kindness so Saul’s family? (Because God had been so kind to David. David wanted to pass along the kindness.)
2. Is it easy to do what David did? When do you find it the most difficult to be kind?
3. Let’s think of some ‘random acts of kindness’ we can do this week. (These can be acts of kindness toward each other, or towards those outside your family too. Maybe your family can surprise a neighbor by making cookies for them, give a compliment to the cashier at the store… Each night at dinner have family members share any random acts of kindness they performed that day.)
Practice speaking kindness: Form a circle. Have a family member sit in the middle. Everyone else will each say something kind to the family member in the middle. Make sure each person gets a turn sitting in the middle and having kind words said to them.
Seek God together
Introduce this section by saying: Being kind is not always easy. We need God to help us. That’s why it’s a fruit of the Spirit. So let’s seek God together.
Build a prayer together using the P.R.A.Y. method. Assign the following parts to family members to pray aloud. Encourage them to add their own words if they feel like it.
P – (PRAISE)
O Lord, our God, You are kind to all. Thank You for all the ways You are kind to us. (Family members can join in for this part by completing this sentence: “God, You show us kindness by __________________.”)
R – (REPENT)
Lord, because of your great kindness we can come to You and confess our sins. We confess that we are not always kind to each other. Forgive us for all the times we have been unkind to our families, our friends and our neighbors. Forgive us for our mean words and our selfish actions. Thank you for your mercy and patience with us. Thank You for Your forgiveness.
A – (ASK)
Heavenly Father, as Your children we want to be like You. Please help us to keep our eyes open for ways to show kindness. Please grow the fruit of kindness in each of us and help us spread your kindness to everyone around us.
Y – (YIELD)
God, you are the kindest in all the universe. You think about us all the time and take care of us. You put us before Yourself when You died on the cross for our sins. Help us when we are feeling selfish to yield to You. Help us to put You and others before ourselves. May the Holy Spirit fill us and change us this week, in the Name of Jesus, our Lord, we pray. Amen.
